One Response to Unanswered: Rabbi Blumenthal Corrects Dr. Brown

  1. Concerned Reader says:

Rabbi, the issue with the “priest sitting on his throne” is that while the priest is a temple builder, the temple exists for atonement, and universally and without fail in near eastern literature, a priest’s job is to intercede with G-d on behalf of the people, for some kind of atoning work, even in the context of teaching.

I agree that Dr. Brown is not giving due attention to the role of the messianic figure as a temple builder, but even some Christians accept that a 3rd temple will exist including Dr. Brown, as far as I am aware.

My problem with viewing Jesus as the “priest siting on his throne” is that John the Baptist would actually fit this prophecy easier than Jesus. If John was a cousin of Jesus, his mother would have had a link to David just as Mary is alleged to have had, and John’s father was a Kohen, which means John would literally be a priest with Davidic ties, whereas for Jesus it would only be symbolic.
