The concept of mitzvah can prevent us from feeling like we are such good guys for doing something good. We’re not doing it because we’re such great guys, but because we feel it’s our moral responsibility. We should be honest with ourselves that maybe we don’t really want to do the act of kindness but we still do it because it’s our responsibility to our fellow Man and because it is their right to get help from us. The mitzvah of tzedakah means justice/love – it’s not just an act of love (charity – means love) but it’s an act of justice-love because the recipients have a right to share our resources. We are not just being kind, but we are being fair and just by sharing our resources with those who have a God-given right to it. This is tzedakah. And it really can be said of all mitzvot.
