TYVM – From a Jew to a Christian

TYVM – From a Jew to a Christian

Dear Chanan

You seem to be disturbed that my heart is bent toward the One Creator of heaven and earth and to Him alone. You would have me bend my heart toward the central character in the Christian Bible as well. I understand that this desire of yours is an expression of your care for me. You believe that if I do not bend my heart toward this character then I will be missing out on God and on Messiah. You would have me add the Christian Bible to the canon of Scripture and you would want me to join the community of “believers”. And lastly you believe that with my refusal to bend my heart toward this character I will have no hope.

I would tell you that your suggestion would have me violate Exodus 20:3 as well as Deuteronomy 13:4. But I realize that you are not such a stickler for the “Law”. So I decided to try to explain why your perspective on what I lack is unfounded.

God

I have a God thank you very much. My God loves me more than it is possible for any other entity to love me. Every breath that I take is a kiss from my God. Every one of my heartbeats is a personal caress from Him. You see; it was He who designed my body and soul and it is He who sustains them every second. But even if I were a rock I would still know that my God loves me. It was my God who brought every iota of existence into being. He loved me before I existed. And it is only His love that allows existence to continue to exist.

Any love that anyone else has for me is a gift from my God. Even if someone were to lay down their life for me they would still not love me as much as my God loves me. After all; no one really owns anything but my God. The life of everyone else aside from God Himself belongs to my God and to Him alone. If anyone has feelings toward me it is because my God planted them in his or her heart and if anyone gives me anything it can only be something that my God had first given to them.

The entire panorama of activity all takes place in the arena that my God created and all of the characters in the play of life are subjects of my God. There is not one spot in the entire range of existence that does not belong completely and absolutely to the Rock of my Heart.

Let me spell this out for you. Everything that your hero did was done in the world that my God created, while my God was sustaining him, and with gifts that my God freely granted him and for which he paid nothing.

My God is a forgiving God. When I fall short, and that happens all the time, all I need to do is to open my heart to the One who created my heart. I know that He loves me and hears my prayer; I know that He listens even before I talk and I know that he forgives my sins.

I can’t ask for a better God, a more loving God or for a closer God. All goodness, all kindness, all holiness, all truth and all love reside in Him and in Him alone.

There is nothing that I lack with my God.

Messiah

I have a Messiah as well thank you very much. His name is David. God anointed him through the prophet Samuel so that makes him a “Messiah”; an anointed one. I couldn’t ask for a better king. He laid out his entire heart for me in the book of Psalms. In these songs he shows me how a subject of God ought to live. In David’s life and in the words of his song he leads me in submission to my God.

My king takes the simple truth of life and shows me how it is the deepest song of my heart. The straightforward fact that God is the Master of all becomes an incredible journey on the strings of my king’s harp. And it is on this journey that I want to live my life and it is on this journey that I want to spend eternity.

All of the righteous descendants of David passed on his torch. God promised that it is the dynasty of David which will retain the position of the leader of men. And it is to this dynasty that I pledged my heart.

David lived his life in awe and appreciation of God’s sovereignty and he taught us to do the same. His descendant that will rightfully occupy his throne will further that cause and bring it to all of the nations. The man who directed all attention to himself and used the “glory of the Father” as an empty catch-phrase is the very antithesis of David and his dynasty.

When the long awaited for descendant of David appears he will not need a new pledge of loyalty from my community because we have already pledged our allegiance to the crown of David. And as David before him, he will not try to stand between me and my God. Instead he will stand where my King stands today; that is, right beside me facing God.

Scripture

I have a Law from my God. It is a perfect and just law (Psalm 19; 119). It teaches me right from wrong and it is the light of my life.

Now you want me to place a Greek book right there alongside the teaching of my God.

I cannot do this.

The same witnesses who testified that the Law I possess is truly the Law of God taught me that your book is not. But please allow me to take this one step further.

The book that you hold runs contrary to the word of God in so many different ways. Your book completely ignores the national relationship that my nation shares with God. Your book shows a disdain for the laws of my God. And your book contains some teachings that are simply not right according to the sense of justice that God planted in all of our hearts. Let me provide two illustrations.

In the book of John Jesus teaches that those who reject him do so out of their hatred for light while those who accept him are lovers of light (John 3:19-21). In the same book Jesus goes on to say that those who don’t believe him are “of the devil” while those who are “of God” hear his words (John 8:44-47). The obvious implication is that acceptance of Jesus is some sort of litmus test to see whether one loves the light and is of God or if one hates the light and is of the devil.

Let us step back for a minute. Is it morally correct to accept the claims for the divinity of a man before he has proven himself? Even Christian theology which allows for a man to be divine would still not have us simply accepting anyone’s claims for divinity. Christianity acknowledges that if Jesus’ claims conflicted with the Jewish Scriptures then the Jewish people were duty-bound to reject him. The morally correct approach to Jesus’ claims, even according to Christian theology, ought to be an approach of caution and skepticism.

But John’s Jesus completely ignores this truth. He ignores the fact that his audience was obligated by the word of God that they had already received to greet his claims with skepticism (if not outright rejection). Instead he applies a manipulative tactic. “If you don’t believe in me then you must be a rotten apple from the beginning.” Who benefits from this teaching? The ones who don’t believe in him don’t care for his evaluation of their spiritual ancestry. Those who do believe in him don’t need this teaching. It is to those who are on the fence that this teaching is directed. This is an effort to get them to make a decision on the basis of not wanting to be seen as “wicked” by Jesus or by those who believe in his words.

Is this a reason to believe in Jesus? Even according to Christian theology is it right for a person to accept Jesus so as to “prove” that he was a “child of light” all along? In any case the historical ramification of this teaching was that the followers of Jesus redefined their view of humanity in a very negative way. For many dark centuries the believers of John’s Jesus defined the goodness of man, not by the practice of justice or mercy, but by belief in Jesus or lack thereof.

No; your book does not belong next to the words of my God.

Community

I belong to a community that stands in a covenantal relationship with God. My community has been under judgment for the past 2000 years but we have also been incredibly blessed by God. The survival of my community as a distinct entity, both physical and spiritual, is an open miracle. My community has been blessed with moral giants, men and women who lived lives of Godliness. These holy people impacted my community and guided us in our relationship with God. God chose to preserve His testimony in the heart of my community. For the past 2500 years my community, as a community, has not succumbed to the lure of idolatry. This is true despite the fact that before that time idolatry was a deep problem in the hearts of my people. I don’t believe that this is a human achievement. I believe that it is a gift from God to my community. It was God who poured courage into the hearts of my people so that they can withstand the persecutions and the torture and remain loyal to our calling as a witness nation before God.

God preserved the covenantal sign of Sabbath in my community (Exodus 31:17). This tells me that the sanctity that my community experiences is not a delusion but a blessing from God.

What kind of community would you have me join? A community that produced haters and killers of God’s firstborn son? Oh yes, I know that you disassociate yourself from hatred of Jews. You tell me that those evil men were not “real Christians”. If that is the case then why do their books still fill your libraries? Why do their teachings still fill your universities? Did your community ever stop and do some serious soul-searching, asking yourselves, how it is that Jesus’ message got derailed? (if it ever did). Did your community ever stop to ask themselves if the theological seeds which sprouted those hateful fruit are still present in the orchard of your theology? Or do you just satisfy yourself with the pat assurance that those were not “real Christians”?

No; your people are not my people.

Hope

I don’t have everything I want. My nation is still in exile and I would want nothing more than that my God restore His presence in our midst in an open and manifest way. My people are still suffering from confusion and persecution. In my own life I fall short of God’s light and truth. But my God promised me that these will come to an end. God promised that our mourning will end and that His glory will return to dwell in Jerusalem as in the days of yore. And He promised to circumcise our heart after He brings us back into His beloved land.

The hope that God gave me goes much further than that. God promised that His testimony will not depart from the lips of my people (Isaiah 59:21). God promised that our loyalty to Him in these dark days of exile and confusion will play a role in His plan for all mankind (Isaiah 49:23). And God promised us that His light will shine through us to illuminate the world (Isaiah 60:3).

I am not trading in these Divine promises for an offer of “personal salvation”.

Thank you very much.

Tsvi Jacobson on Hebrews 9:22

Tsvi Jacobson on Hebrews 9:22

In the New Testament book of Hebrews chapter 9:22 we read: “Without the shedding of blood there is no remission” When one reads this it is no wonder that Christian Evangelists and the Missionaries are so busy trying to convert the Jewish people who do not accept Jesus as Messiah or as divinity. If the Missionaries are correct we are in a deep problem. So it is incumbent upon us to examine the Hebrew Scriptures and see if Hebrews 9:22 is right.

1.

We read of the blood sacrifices in the book of Leviticus and nobody would consider stating that they were not efficacious. In fact in Leviticus 17:11 we find that blood is not to be eaten as G-d has given it upon the altar to make atonement for sin. In fact Hebrews 9:22 is said to be based on Leviticus 17:11. There is a problem for the missionaries, Leviticus doesn’t say that without shedding of blood there is no remission. To make matters even worse the book of Hebrews 10:4 then says: “It is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins” ?????? ????? (go figure) There you have two contradictions that the New Testament makes in commenting on our scriptures. With that straightened out I want to give you some examples of remission or forgiveness of sin without blood being involved.

2,

In Leviticus chapter 5 where the trespass offerings are mentioned we find that a lamb or goat is to be brought and if one is not able to bring either of them two turtle doves or two pigeons are to be brought. If in fact one cannot afford these Numbers 5:11 states clearly one is allowed to bring a 10th part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering….and it further states: “IT IS A SIN OFFERING” Now think carefully when was the last time you saw any blood in a bag of flour you brought home from the super market?

The answer is self-evident.

3.

King David was a holy man of G-d but even holy men sometimes fail. I am sure you know the story of how he lusted after the wife of Uriah and sent Uriah to the front lines where he died in battle. Nathan the Prophet comes to David and with a parable tells David that the sin that he committed was a henous one. David confesses his sin and is truly repentant and in 2 Samuel 12:13 Nathan says to David: “The L-rd has also put away your sin, you shall not die.” There was no blood atonement, not even two turtle doves, nor two pigeons, not even fine flour.

David repented and God forgave.

4.

King Solomon dedicated the Temple and during this said a prayer to G-d in which he stated that if Israel in battle was carried away to another nation and they repented and sought the L-rd and prayed toward the city of Jerusalem and the Holy Temple for G-d to hear their prayer and forgive their sin (1 Kings 8:44-50 In 1 Kings 9:3 G-d says to Solomon: “I have heard your supplication” The ones Solomon was talking about did not offer sacrifice yet they would be heard and they would be forgiven. Again all this without a blood atonement.

5.

Lastly the 10 tribes of Israel were involved in idolatry and Hosea the prophet was sent unto them exhorting them to repent and come back to the God of Israel whose habitation was in Jerusalem. Hear what Hosea said unto them:

“O Israel, return unto the L-rd your G-d; for you have fallen by your iniquity. Take with you WORDS: say unto him, Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so we will render the bullocks of our lips” (Hosea 14:1,2)

Notice in all of these examples the one thing missing is a blood sacrifice. It seems that the New Testament book of Hebrews 9:22 is something that the Hebrew Scriptures knows nothing about.

Thus the real question is why then does a Jew or a non-Jew for that matter need Jesus? Answer: They don’t and neither do you.

(And all scriptures quoted in this paper are from the Christian King James Bible)

Response to Line of Fire 14

Response to Line of Fire 14

In the July 25th 2013 edition of Dr.Brown’s radio show he interviews Tzahi Shapira, author of “Return of the Kosher Pig”. At one point during the show Shapira makes an attempt to respond to a point that I raised in Contra Brown.

The point in question is one of the foundational arguments with which the Jewish Scriptures empower the Jew in his debate with any competing faith including the faith in Jesus/Yeshua. It is simply this. God Himself taught the Jews who it is that they are to worship. It follows that no one is authorized to teach differently than God (Deuteronomy 4:9,15,35). Shapira’s response is that Jesus was present at Sinai. The thrust of this argument is that the Jews were taught by God to worship a trinity. He bases this bizarre claim on his reading of the complex and mysterious kabbalistic work; the Zohar.

According to Shapira, the Zohar teaches that the voices that the text of Exodus 19:16 describes of are the three voices of a triune god.

Before we analyze Shapira’s understanding of the Zohar we will point out that his argument still does not answer this core Jewish Objection. In Deuteronomy 4:9 we are given to understand that God designated the living testimony of the Jewish people to transmit the message of Sinai to future generations. This concept is reinforced in the book of Isaiah were God points to Israel as the witnesses to the truth of His sovereignty (Isaiah 43:10). Since the living Jewish people saw Shapira’s claim as the very antithesis of what we were taught at Sinai then his claim is without foundation. Throughout history the Jewish people have understood their calling before God that they testify to the world that every iota of finite existence is completely subject to God. The very witnesses God appointed to preserve the message testify that Shapira has it wrong.

When we examine Shapira’s rendering of the Zohar (on page 64 of his book) it becomes obvious that the words of the Zohar have no connection at all to Shapira’s fantasies.

  1. Shapira inserted the word “Messiah” into the text where no such word appears. In his book he claims that the word “water” is a secret code-word for “Messiah”. He provides no sources for this conjecture.
  2. Shapira translates the word “ruach” as “spirit” while from the context of the passage it obviously means “wind”.
  3. Shapira conflates two paragraphs in the Zohar without any textual justification.
  4. Shapira leads in from the Zohar’s comments on the book of Exodus into the comments on the book of Genesis as if these two followed one another seamlessly. It goes without saying that they do not. The Zohar’s comment on Genesis is a missionary favorite and I have responded to that particular argument in a previous article: https://yourphariseefriend.wordpress.com/2012/01/02/context-and-kabbalah/
  5. Shapira translates the word “gevanin”, which means “colors” as “voices”. There is no philological basis for this translation.

The Zohar is describing the spiritual forces that were involved in the sounds that Israel heard during the Sinai experience. These sounds were what Israel heard before God actually spoke to them and these were not the voice or voices of God. This passage in the Zohar is not presenting a teaching on the nature of God.

In this same radio show Shapira insists that the basis of his belief is the simple contextual meaning of the Jewish Bible. If this were true he would respond to my challenge with a passage in Scripture. The fact that he needed to find his answer in a book that declares his worship to be idolatrous tells us that he was not able to find an answer elsewhere. And the fact that in this short quotation from the Zohar he managed to include five incredible errors tells us that his approach to the Zohar is not based on language or context; neither is it based on a respect for the intention of the author. It is based on the same foundation which had Matthew see the Virgin Mary in Isaiah 7:14.

Very Near

Very Near

In Deuteronomy chapter 30 verses 11 thru 14 Moses reassures the Jewish people that the commandment which he has presented to them is not hidden nor is too far. Quite the opposite, it is very near to our mouths and our hearts to do it.

How is the commandment close to us? How close is it for us to fulfill every directive of God to perfection? King Solomon exclaims: Who can say that I have purified my heart I am cleansed from my sin? (Proverbs 20:9). In the book of Job we read of the imperfection of angels; certainly no human can be perfect (Job 4:18). How then can Moses tell us that the law that he is presenting to us is “close”? What is “close” about it?

Perhaps we can understand this by focusing on the words of verse 14. Moses says that it is “hadavar” – “the thing” that is close to us. “Hadavar” is the one single thing; it is this one thing that is close.

Following the law consists of many different steps. We must study the law and we must pray to the Giver of the Law, we must walk in the ways of God and be holy as God is holy, we must practice kindness and justice, and so much more. But as people that live within the boundary of time there is always only one thing in front of us here and now. Perhaps it is our time for learning and there is one line of Torah that demands our attention, our power of concentration, our hearts and our minds. Perhaps we are talking to someone and the responsibility of the moment is to exercise humility and sensitivity in our relationship with another person. Perhaps we are about to speak words of prayer before God and the call of the moment is to pour our hearts into the words we are going to say. We might be in a place of solitude and our loyalty to God demands that we bring to mind God’s blessings and turn our thoughts away from that which God has not granted to us.

Whatever path we take in life there is always only one commandment that is in front of us right now.

It is a mistake to allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by the work we see ahead of us down the road. At this point in time we don’t need the power to do the work of tomorrow so there is no reason for God to give it to us now. But we can be sure that God will give us the strength to take the very next step.

And there is always only one step in front of you here and now.

Response to Line of Fire 13 – Dispelling A Myth

Response to Line of Fire 13 – Dispelling A Myth

On the July 18 2013 Line of Fire Radio show Dr. Brown explains to his listening audience why it is that he cannot respond to my arguments in written format. Amongst many other reasons Dr. Brown derides the entire method of written communication. He argues that when two people are communicating through e-mail and they realize that they are missing each other they pick up the phone to clarify the misunderstanding through direct verbal communication. Furthermore, Dr. Brown contends that written communication can go round and round for years while a face to face public debate can be settled in a matter of hours.

There are several flaws in Dr. Brown’s argument.

1. In a situation where two people are honestly and earnestly trying to understand each other perhaps it is easier for them to clarify misunderstandings with face to face verbal communication. But that is not the case here. Judaism and Christianity are mutually exclusive. Only one can be true. The one side is using logic and argumentation in order to bring sharper clarity to the issues while the other must be using logic and argumentation to obfuscate and to confuse. This process does not need to be a conscious process it could well be that both participants in the discussion sincerely believe that they are working for the truth. But one of them is not.

This being the case it takes careful and deliberate consideration to find the flaws in the arguments of the representative of falsehood and it takes even more deliberate consideration to weigh out the right words in order to articulate the findings with clarity and force. In order to find the truth in such a discussion it is necessary to use time and careful thought. Haste and impatience have no place in this discussion.

2. I have had several “written debates” and they do not go “round and round for years”. I have found that the arguments of the side that represents falsehood unravel rather quickly while the arguments of the side that represents truth only get stronger and sharper.

https://yourphariseefriend.wordpress.com/2011/10/28/response-to-blesch/

3. The discussion here is not about a “misunderstanding” between two parties and it is not about a “debate”. We are talking about two world-religions and the differences between them. Proponents of either religion encourage the adherents of the other religion to reconsider their commitment to their belief system. In order to make an honest decision people on either side of the fence need to have all the relevant information in front of them. If Dr. Brown is satisfied that he has placed all of his arguments on the table that is his prerogative. For my part I have pointed out that in all of his written and oral teachings he has not addressed some of the basic age old arguments with which Judaism has challenged Christianity. I have pointed out that some of his central arguments contradict each other and I have pointed out how he has seriously misrepresented some of the main issues that stand between Judaism and Christianity.

I appeal to the seeker of truth: Please do not take me on my word. Please study these matters diligently and carefully. But please do yourself an eternal favor and don’t take Dr. Brown on his word either. Study his writings, listen to his teachings, and study the works of the representatives of Judaism.

I trust that you will find the truth as so many have done before you.

You Can Talk – But You Can’t Hide

You Can Talk – But You Can’t Hide

On the July 18 2013 edition of his Line of Fire radio show Dr. Brown explains to his listeners why it is that he is not responding to my critique of his work. At the same time he addresses my policy of refusing to debate him in a public setting with the question: “what do you have to hide?” In order to give Christianity a veneer of honesty and love for truth he holds up his willingness to debate any rabbi in a public setting. And in order to give Judaism an appearance of dishonesty and falsehood he speaks of our refusal to engage in the spectacle of a public debate. He makes the claim: “Let us recognize that it is not I that is running from dialogue”.

This whole discussion is really a smokescreen.

You have the arguments themselves and you have the people that are arguing. Dr. Brown himself introduces his five volume series with the words: “The real question is, What do the Hebrew scriptures teach? Which Jewish expression follows the Bible? That must be the rule of Jewish faith and practice.”

In this radio show instead of directing the attention of his audience towards the “real question” he tries to get his audience to focus on the image of Dr. Brown as a fearless defender of the “truth” who has “nothing to hide”.

Sadly, I have indeed interacted with many people who rely on their perception of Dr. Brown’s scholarship and integrity. When presented with challenges to belief in Jesus instead of seeking answers themselves they have told me that they are sure that Dr. Brown has already answered these questions.

On the other hand I have met real truth seekers who have decided to seek the truth for themselves. These people have made brave and courageous life-changing decisions when they chose to follow the truth with no one holding their hand but God Himself. These people have found that the Jewish community has provided clear and concise answers to every question that Dr. Brown has presented against the Jewish belief system. These people have also realized that 2000 years of the Christian effort to justify their own belief system has not provided answers to basic questions that a Jewish child can ask. And these people have abandoned their faith in Dr. Brown and have put their faith in the God of Israel.

I have found that people who are truly seeking for the truth generally do not expect to find it in the setting of a public debate. These people want to take the time to study and examine the issues without the distractions of the flash and noise of a public debate. Those who seek the truth down this path will find the answers of the Jewish community and will be confronted by the non-response of the Christian missionary that hides behind smokescreens like the one thrown up by Dr. Brown.

But there may be some people who are persuaded to believe that the truth can be found in the venue of a public debate. For the sake of these people I have offered to debate Dr. Brown in the following manner. He will speak on his radio show while I will respond in writing on my blog. In keeping with his pattern of failing to respond to me he has yet to take me up on this offer as well.

As things stand now, I am satisfied that the Jewish community has provided the truth seeker with the tools to be able to see through the missionary arguments. Should Dr. Brown or any other missionary come up with a substantial argument that has not yet been addressed by the Jewish community, it will be incumbent upon us to fill that gap. But as long as Dr. Brown is not adding any new substance to the argument but is instead busying himself with smokescreens we will continue to attempt to bring clarity to the world without his help.
